Delectable – Your own private delicious

I’ve been a big user of delicious for ages – since before Yahoo snapped it up. I genuinely think it’s a great service which performs a job that other ‘bookmark’ sites just didn’t get right. It’s simple and intuitive. Delicious also has some excellent browser extensions, I have used both the Firefox and Google Chrome variants with great success.

However, recently, Yahoo announced that delicious was to put out to pasture or ‘sunset’ in Y! parlance. Even though this hasn’t been confirmed, it still raised quite a few eyebrows for those of us who use the service regularly. I’m a big fan of ‘owning your own data’ and, as such, decided to see if I could build something which would allow me to combine my love for WordPress with the probable eventual need for a new bookmarking service. And as it turns out, I could build something. That something I’ve dubbed Delectable.

Delecta-whatnow?

Delectable is a Google Chrome extension which allows you to save links to your own WordPress (3.0+) powered website. It works in a very similar way to the delicious extension in that, once you have linked it to your WordPress install (a 30-second job), you can store links to interesting sites you find. Only this time, those links are stored on your own website, rather than on Yahoo’s. You can (optionally) give your links a title and some tags as well as decide which WordPress category they go in. By default, this extension assigns a ‘post format’ of ‘Link’ to your, err, links. Your theme will need to support this feature, but if it doesn’t, I believe they’ll just be like normal blog posts.

There’s quite a few features in the initial release including the ability to schedule your post rather than publish it immediately. You can also choose if you want your links to be posts or pages. (Currently, the WordPress XML-RPC API doesn’t support custom post types unfortunately. That being said, the post format of ‘links’ is perfect for the job).

I’ll be continually updating this little chappy – a few people have asked for things such as the ability to add custom fields and also content before publishing. I’ll see what I can whisk up.
